타임 스탬프는 RFC 3161과 Microsoft Authenticode의 두 가지 프로토콜 중 하나를 따릅니다.

This document updates RFC 3161. It allows the use of ESSCertIDv2, as defined in RFC 5035, to specify the hash of a signer certificate when the hash is calculated with a function other than the Secure Hash Algorithm (SHA-1).
반면에 Authenticode는 cab, .exe, .ocx 및 .dll과 같은 매니 폴드 형식으로 사용될 수 있습니다.
Microsoft Authenticode 서명은 이진 데이터에 대한 저작권 및 무결성을 보장합니다. Authenticode 타임 스탬프는 표준 PKCS # 9 카운터 서명을 기반으로합니다. Microsoft의 서명 도구를 사용하면 개발자가 Authenticode 서명을 첨부 할 때 타임 스탬프를 첨부 할 수 있습니다. 타임 스탬프를 사용하면 서명에 사용 된 인증서가 만료 된 후에도 Authenticode 서명을 확인할 수 있습니다.
